Punjab Launches “Apna Khet Apna Rozgar” Scheme to Empower 50,000 Landless Farmers Across the Province

Lahore (Staff Report) — The Government of Punjab has officially launched the “Apna Khet Apna Rozgar” scheme, a new agricultural initiative aimed at providing land access and livelihood opportunities to landless farmers and rural families across the province.

The scheme was introduced under the direction of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif and is being described as one of the province’s major steps toward rural economic development and poverty reduction.

Land allocation for eligible families

According to official sources, the programme will initially benefit around 50,000 families. Under the plan, eligible applicants will be provided 3 to 5 acres of agricultural land on a long-term cultivation basis. While ownership of land will remain with the government, beneficiaries will have full rights to cultivate and earn income from the allotted land.

Authorities have indicated that the scheme may gradually utilize nearly 250,000 acres of state land in different phases, depending on verification and availability.

Objective of the scheme

The primary goal of the initiative is to reduce rural unemployment, strengthen agricultural output, and discourage migration from villages to urban centres. The government aims to convert landless labourers into self-sufficient farmers by providing them both land and agricultural support.

Key benefits

Under the scheme, selected beneficiaries are expected to receive:

  • Allocation of 3–5 acres of cultivable land
  • Access to subsidized seeds and fertilizers
  • Support through government agriculture programmes
  • Financial and technical assistance for farming
  • Priority consideration for rural youth and low-income households

Who can apply

Officials say the scheme will be open to residents of Punjab who meet the following conditions:

  • Must hold a valid CNIC
  • Must be landless or from a low-income farming family
  • Should have a rural background
  • Preference may be given to unemployed youth
  • Must not be involved in loan default cases

Application process

Applications are expected to be submitted through an official government portal as well as designated district agriculture offices. Applicants will be required to provide personal details, CNIC information, and proof of eligibility.

The government is expected to formally announce the online registration system soon, after which applicants will be able to apply and track their status.

Launch phase and timeline

The scheme has been approved in 2026 and is being rolled out in phases. However, no final deadline for applications has yet been announced. Officials suggest that the programme will continue throughout the year as land verification and distribution progresses.

Government’s vision

Officials have described the initiative as part of a broader strategy to modernize agriculture in Punjab and improve the socio-economic condition of rural communities. The government believes that providing direct access to land will help increase productivity and create sustainable income sources for thousands of families.
